If you are:

  • an adult sexual assault victim you can contact your local Sexual Assault Service, based in your Area Health Service, for help with crisis counselling as well as medical and ongoing counselling needs, help in reporting a sexual assault to the police and preparing for any court hearings or making a victim impact statement. These services are free and confidential.
  • an adult who was sexually abused as a child, you can talk with staff from different agencies such as a Sexual Assault Service, a Community Health Centre, or the Victims Services website.
  • a parent, carer, friend or family member of a child sexual assault victim, you can also contact their nearest Sexual Assault Service.

Anyone who has experienced sexual assault can contact the NSW Rape Crisis Centre, a state-wide 24 hour telephone crisis, support and referral service on 1800 424 017. Rape Crisis also offers a 24 hour on-line counselling service.

Children, teenagers and young people


In addition to NSW Health Sexual Assault Services, and the Approved Counselling Scheme through Victim's Services listed above:

Free and confidential counselling is available from Kids HelpLine on 1800 55 1800 (freecall, except from a mobile phone) or the Kids Helpline website which provides more information on the services provided specifically for young people aged between 5 and 25. Children and young people can gain protection from sexual assault by making a report to Family and Community Services' 24-hour Child Protection Helpline on 132 111. You can ring from anywhere in NSW for the cost of a local call. The Community Services website has further information about contacting Community Services near where you live. If you are a child or teenage sexual assault victim, or their non-offending family or carer, you can contact a Child and Adolescent Sexual Assault Counsellors (CASAC) service close to you.

If you wish to talk to the police about a sexual assault, you can ask to speak with an Aboriginal Support Person if there is one available in that command.

If you are an Aboriginal child or young person or are concerned that a child or young person has been sexually assaulted, you can make a report to Family and Community Services by contacting their Child Protection Helpline on 132 111. If you would like to speak to someone in person, you can go your local Community Services Centre where arrangements can be made for you to talk to an Aboriginal Caseworker.

If you wish to speak to an Aboriginal counsellor in your area, you can contact the Centre for Aboriginal Health on (02) 9391 9502 about the availability of Aboriginal Family Health Workers, and/or Aboriginal sexual assault workers in your area. NSW health has specially trained counsellors who receive training to respond to the needs of victims of sexual assault.

Compensation and counselling is also available. If you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Island person who is a victim of crime in NSW, like family violence or sexual assault, you can call our confidential enquiry line on 188 019 123. Victims Services has an Aboriginal Contact Officer who can refer you to the best person to help you access information about compensation and/or counselling.
